20mm worktops vs 30mm worktops – are 20mm quartz worktops good enough?

Choosing the right kitchen worktop thickness can be a big dilemma, especially when it comes to quartz surfaces. At the end of the day, it’s usually a preference issue – do you prefer the more traditional, thicker standard kitchen worktop 30mm look, or something more modern, sleek and compact as is the case with 20mm worktop?

In this blog, we will elaborate more regarding the choice of kitchen worktop depth. We’ll showcase the pros and cons of the both quartz kitchen worktops sizes, and hopefully help you make the right choice, to ensure you’re not just relying on a whim or personal preference.

20mm quartz worktop or 30mm quartz worktop – Choosing the right worktop thickness for you

Quartz worktops are usually provided in two worktop thicknesses: 20mm and 30mm. Most quartz slab supplier companies adhere to this quartz slab depth standard. The famous stone brands like Fugen Stone, CRL, Cimstone, Nile Quartz, Technistone or Quartzhub are only selling their quartz slab products in 30mm and 20mm thickness.

Occasionally, brands like Silesotne will have the odd quartz colour product available in 12mm thickness, but this is rare. So, if you’ll end up purchasing kitchen worktop quartz or granite makes, then in most cases opting for a 20mm or 30mm quartz worktop will be your final choice.

But which is best? Let’s first shine the spotlight on the 20mm worktops that are increasingly growing in popularity. A solution that might just be the perfect fit for your kitchen.

20mm Worktop – Why you should get a thinner 20mm quartz worktops work surface:

Cost-Effectiveness: Cost matters. Nowadays buying your worktops for less is vital, and not many people realise that opting for a 20mm worktop can save you a significant sum. In fact (depending on the stone supplier), you could even save hundreds of pounds by choosing the thinner option. Given that the difference in thickness is barely perceptible, it’s a practical choice for those who want the aesthetics of quartz without spending too much. If you want to test out the differences between the 20mm vs 30mm worktop prices, we invite you to give our Online Quote system a go. You can select one colour in the two thicknesses, provide the right details and receive two varied quartz worktop prices at the end. You’ll instantly notice the price of quartz worktops will differ based on the thickness alone.

Lighter Weight: One other advantage of a 20mm kitchen worktop, particularly when it comes to materials like quartz, is their lighter weight. This might seem inconsequential, but it’s crucial for the longevity of your kitchen cabinets. The lighter load reduces pressure, mitigating the risk of cabinets sagging over time, or the legs giving in. After all, stone is known to be notoriously heavy. To install the kitchen worktops usually a minimum of two-three people are required, and that same strain can over the years impact your cabinets. Of course, we always say that when the cabinets are of good quality, are relatively new and are fitted by professionals, they could hold to any worktop weight without budging an inch. However, as we all know, not all cabinets have that quality about them. So, if your kitchen is already aged, or fitted to a low standard, maybe opting for 20mm granite worktops will ensure your kitchen remains in top condition for years to come.

Modern Aesthetics: The sleek, minimalist look is all the rage nowadays. Thinner worktops offer a contemporary aesthetic that’s increasingly preferred by homeowners and designers alike. The slim profile of 20mm worktops adds a touch of sophistication to any kitchen, making it feel less weighty and encumbering. Some people don’t like how a thick kitchen worktop becomes too overpowering in a kitchen. The low quartz worktop sizes are a perfect remedy for this. While a standard kitchen worktop depth of 30mm can be very pronounced, the 20mm kitchen worktop is subtle and elegant.

Durability: Contrary to common misconceptions, 20mm worktops are just as durable as their thicker counterparts. Modern manufacturing techniques ensure that even thinner slabs of quartz are robust and resilient against everyday wear and tear. So rest assured, your 20mm quartz worktop will stand the test of time. This is a perfect solution for those who desire thin worktops, but seek that strength as well. After all, a 20mm oak worktop or 20mm laminate worktop are constantly at risk of breaking, cracking, splitting or chipping. With a 20mm work surface from quartz, you could even stand on the thing without it breaking.

Advantages of 30mm Worktops – Kitchen worktops quartz in a standard kitchen worktop depth

Now, let’s give credit where it’s due. 30mm worktops offer their own set of advantages that might sway some buyers. Once again, when you’re debating the quartz worktop 20mm or 30mm choice, a lot of it will depend on your personal preference. However, there are genuine practicalities to thick worktops.

Solid Appearance: If you’re a fan of the ‘chunky’, traditional look of kitchen worktops, then 30mm worktops should be your given choice. The thicker profile exudes solidity and can be a focal point in your kitchen design. If you really want your granite worktop to stand out, and if you’re a person that appreciates a more substantial feel, then a 30mm quartz worktop will certainly fulfil your needs. Many also claim that a 30mm quartz worktop fits types of kitchens better. For example, if you have wooden cabinets, or solid oak flooring, then it could be argued that a thick worktop suits that style better. Any cottage, farm or traditional design kitchen could benefit with standard worktop with uk style. Of course, this is completely a matter of preference, but we can certainly tell what people mean.

Edge Profile Options: One area where 30mm worktops shine above 20mm worktops is in edge profile customisation. This advantage might not pertain to a 30mm laminate worktop, but it certainly applies to stone. Namely, with extra thickness, you have more freedom to explore elaborate edge profiles, such as double ogee bullnose or other intricate edge designs. After all a 2cm worktop doesn’t offer much depth to create various folds, bevels, bends or waves. A 3cm worktop may not seem like much, but that additional 1cm really adds a lot of room to play with – especially if the edge profiles are manually made. So, if you’re aiming for a bespoke, high-end look with unique edges, the standard worktop thickness might be the way to go.

Perceived Value: Thicker worktops with a standard worktop depth uk style i.e. 30mm quartz worktop, is often associated with luxury and quality. This doesn’t pertain to everyone, but many people still believe that a 30mm worktop depth is the ‘luxurious’ choice, while a 20mm worktop looks ‘budgety’ and ‘cheap’. This, of course, is complete nonsense. As we explained above, the minimalistic 20mm worktop sizes are perceived as modern and contemporary, by kitchen designers, architects and common public alike. However, for some homeowners, the perception of value that comes with 30mm worktops outweighs any practical considerations. If you’re one of those homeowners, and if you’re looking to make a statement with your kitchen, putting that extra emphasis on the worktops might be a good solution for you. In the end, what matters is your opinion. You will be spending the most time in that kitchen, so you need to enjoy it. Thick work surfaces could be your solution.

20mm vs 30mm quartz worktop – Final Thoughts

All in all, the choice between 20mm and 30mm worktops will boil down to personal preference, budget, and design aesthetic. While 30mm worktops offer a solid, standard, traditional look and more manufacturing customisations (like with the edge profile options), the 20mm worktops shine in terms of cost-effectiveness, modern aesthetics, and practicality.

Remember that kitchen worktop sizes uk style i.e. 20mm or 30mm kitchen worktops are both very attractive. There should be no reason to go for something thicker, like the 40mm laminate worktops, as that look is outdated. The thickness of granite worktops or quartz worktops sizes should be entirely your choice. Unless you’re applying logical reasoning to your choices, like the ones listed above, we would discourage you from getting swayed by common myths and opinions.

At the end of the day, both thicknesses can elevate your kitchen’s style and functionality. Whether you opt for the slim profile of 20mm or the substantial feel of 30mm worktops quartz, investing in any quartz worktops, irrespective of the worktop depths kitchen, is a decision you won’t regret. So, weigh your options, calculate your budget, consider your priorities, and choose the thickness that best suits your needs.

And remember, if you ever require any help with your choices, our team will gladly help you out. A standard kitchen worktop height uk style or a more contemporary, minimalistic look? 20mm or 30mm worktops? We can answer all those questions over the phone, or in our Manchester showroom.

How is quartz made? And why are quartz worktops easier to clean than other surfaces?

Quartz worktops are famed for their maintenance-free qualities. Their sleek, stone-like characteristic makes them basically repellent to greasy stains, smudges or dirt. That’s predominantly because nothing gets easily stuck to the surface – even if left over night. Any liquids or solids that fall on quartz do not fuse with it, making it seem as though quartz is coated with teflon.

The truth is, quartz is a man-made product – and some of the main ingredients of the material are composed of non-stick raw materials. The high gloss and the impenetrable, waterproof coating also contribute to quartz’s fantastic easy-clean properties.

Before we discuss further the attributes of quartz, let’s analyse how they’re made and what processes make them such easy-to-clean worktop products:

How are quartz worktops manufactured? Is it a complicated process?

Quartz worktops are a result of an amalgamation of different elements that are compressed and fused together in special environments. From resin to minerals, ground natural quartz and vast pigments (depending the colour in mind), quartz suppliers like Silestone or Compac use complex machinery to create these ‘synthetic’ slabs of stone.

Quartz slabs begin their life in the planning room. Various designers meet together and discuss current colour trends, then browse a catalogue of potential colours that could be released. It’s no different circumstance than the fashion industry, where professional designers amass to participate in discussions regarding new releases, potential products and general concepts. After all, the interior design industry is also constantly changing. There are new styles of kitchen cabinets, flooring, décor and overall appearance. Things that were popular 15 years ago are no longer – the fashion, and therefore the consumer-demand is constantly evolving. With that big quartz brands also need to develop, and they do – on average twenty new products are brought out every two years by quartz companies.

Only ten years ago there wen’t quartzes imitating the natural marble themes like Carrara or Calacatta. Now, every quartz supplier has at least four marble-lookalike quartz slabs among their product collection.

From the planning room, the designs take roughly one year to be ready for physical development. The machinery, the logistics and of course the composition of the stones are constantly consulted, until permission is given to develop a certain product.

Once the resin-pigment-quartz mixture arrives at the factory, it is subjected to extreme heat and pressure, which after merely hours forms giant thick slabs that are then sliced into thin sheets, usually measuring either 2cm or 3cm – depending on the colour.

Interestingly, the process of making man-made quartz is not too dissimilar to creation of true, organic granite. That natural stone is also formed as a result of molten rock cooling under immense amount of pressure. The main difference is that production of quartz is done under a controlled, machinery-equipped environment, while the igneous rock – known by us as granite – is a product of natural circumstances. Not to mention the granite-formation process usually takes far longer than measly hours.

As such, quartz worktops are made through a synthetic process that is a response to current trends and fashion. While it may last hours to actually make a slab of quartz, it takes a long time and a lot of brains & manpower to turn mere concepts into reality i.e. slabs that are then sold individually to you, the customer.

The manufacturing of the slabs is long, tialled and somewhat compilated process – but it’s justified in the price that is then labelled on the stone. Compared to wooden or laminate worktops, which are essentially pieces of wood cut into shape of worktops, it takes a lot more ingenuity, fastidiousness and engineering to create quartz worktops. Materials like ground quartz or resin are also a lot more expensive than wood. This is therefore predominant answer to the question: ‘Why quartz worktops cost so much?’.

Why are quartz worktops clean surfaces. How do they maintain and retain antibacterial properties?

Quartz is currently at the forefront of interior design solutions. Designers, architects and ordinary consumers choose quartz worktops for personal comfort, functionality, and peace of mind that their kitchen surfaces will be long-lasting, resistant, modern and above all beautiful. But many don’t actually realise that quartz worktops are also a fantastic hygienic addition to your kitchen. What do we mean by that?

Let’s examine the quartz properties below, and determine why quartz worktops are the best current solution when it comes to hygiene, cleanliness and our daily health.

Kitchen worktops and the importance of easy, quick maintenance

An average human will spend at least 20% of their daily time in the kitchen. Whether it be to make a morning sandwich, pour some cereal, cook some dinner or prepare the supper.

At the weekend, when we are usually home, carrying out various chores, this can extend to up to 40% – this means we spend hours at a time in one interior. In that time, when we cook, do the washing up or clean the counter-space, we want to make sure that our work is efficient, and cleaning effort is easy and maximised.

Let’s honestly ask ourselves – do we always put a 100% effort into cleaning?

We rush with our cooking to get the dinner ready for 6pm,

We quickly chop-up the washed veg – the tomato squirts some of its juice down the chopping board, a bit leaks onto the worktop,

We throw it in the wok – the oil gushes and sprinkles tiny droplets over the hob,

We boil some water in the kettle, pour it into a pan – the water bounces off the edges and spurts over our splashback and the worktop,

The rice comes to a finish, but not before the gurgling water leaps out onto the worktop,

We fill our glasses with wine, but some of it manages to escape and trickle down the bottle and onto the worktop,

We finish the cooking, dish out, the family has eaten,

By that point at least an hour has passed, and now comes the cleaning process.

It’s unlikely that with such regular, daily busy schedule we’ll have the time or effort to give our kitchen a complete makeover. This deep-clean disinfection process happens maybe one, two times a week at most, but usually, when we come back home after a long shift at work, and take another hour on cooking and eating, we rarely have the mental/physical capacity to scour the surfaces down to the tiniest stain or crumb.

That might not seem tragic, but when your kitchen worktops are composed of wood, metal or laminated surface, over time such imperfection will take their toll on your kitchen surfaces.

That tiny speckle of tomato sauce may discolour your wood in a single night, the regular staining around the sink may in a soon transform into warping, after two-three years a crack – eventually the worktops will deteriorate until they’re rendered useless or very unhygenic / difficult to clean.

Quartz is the solution!

All quartz materials produced by renowned European manufacturers (e.g. Compac Quartz, Fugen Quartz, Silestone Cosentino Quartz, Unistone Quartz, B-Stone Quartz, Technistone Quartz, Cimstone Quartz etc.) are inherently non-porous in nature, meaning nothing can penetrate them. They are imbued with with the most advanced chemical properties – the concoction of resin, quartz and vast other agents means they are essentially always coated with a hydrophobic layer. Therefore cleaning usually ends at a single swipe of the cloth.

You can even lay off that coffee stain, wine splodge or sauce smear for days, even weeks at a time, and still one graze with a damp cloth along the quartz worktops will completely eliminate blemishes or contamination. The aforementioned companies have spent years perfecting their quartz products, and countless hours have been invested into rough, rigorous and dedicated testing of quartz worktops. Finally this resulted in manufacture of a near-flawless material.

So, if you still own laminated, metal or wooden worktops, make sure you switch to quartz ASAP, to save yourself countless hours in cleaning, frequent headaches or anxiety that you’ll damage the worktops.

That’s right, forget about stressing over staining, de-colouring or damaging your kitchen worktops. Nothing can affect quartz worktops negatively, meaning you can put your mind at ease and if you’re tired, neglect cleaning without suffering the consequences. Even if you leave your kitchen dirty or at a non-pristine level, your worktops won’t suffer. Not to mention you’ll be saving yourself priceless hours on cleaning. Many of our past customers who formerly owned wooden, metal or laminated worktops complained about the neverending scrubbing / polishing just to get stains off or attempts at digging out all the grime from the tiny scratches, or drying the worktops helplessly to ensure no droplets are absorbed by the worktops.

Quartz kitchen worktops are engineered in a way to make your life easier, in the long term saving you money – not only on cleaning products but on future investments in repairs/substitutions of worktops. If you own quartz worktops, you won’t be needing any other worktops for a decade or two. These modern kitchen worktops retain their qualities and brand new look for years, and no liquid, acid or time will fade their attributes.

Many architects, designers, home-planners or investors agree on one thing: quartz worktops are truly ideal products for kitchens or interior design.

Non-Porosity is the key to healthier life in the kitchen

All quartzes are non-porous, designed in such way that no liquid can penetrate the surface. As we mentioned above, the composition of many quartzes is a fusion of resin, pigments, quartz particles any many other additives that repel all liquids, keeping your quartz worktops safe and stain-free.

This quality is unique and certainly makes your daily job easier and more efficient. If water gets absorbed into wooden or laminate worktops, which it often does, the worktops will expand, rot or warp over time. Therefore with wooden or laminate worktops one needs to be very careful and preferably clean up instantly after liquid has been spilled. This can make us anxious and render cooking or cleaning – especially when we’re fatigued – very stressful lest we cause damage or discolouration to our surfaces.

The same could go for metal worktops – even though these don’t absorb water, if enough liquid accumulates over time, and we neglect the cleaning, it can generate rust on the worktops, which can be very bad for our health. Quartz worktops, on the other hand are resistant to all kinds of liquids, even the heavy, acidic ones like lime juice, coffee, wine or sauce.

But we haven’t yet mentioned the most important aspect – non-porosity offered by quartz worktops successfully counters bacteria, preventing it from sinking in.

Resistance to damage = Resistance to bacteria, grime and germs

Wood worktops, laminate worktops and even metal worktops have one primary flaw in common – they’re susceptible to damage. And this can really spoil your levels of cleanliness.

Take a hefty slice out of your bread on your wooden worktops and you’re going to be left with scratches and cut-marks that are essentially non-repairable.

Expose your plastic or conglomerate worktops to a boiling pan and they will melt or charr with black stains that will be near impossible to remove. The same goes for sharp objects that will easily leave cut marks on the surface.

Drop a mug on your laminate worktops and you’ll be left with chips and indentations.

Slide your cutlery or other metal objects across the surface of your metal worktops and you’re going to generate minute scratches that may be invisible to the naked-eye.

For these three, and many other worktop varieties, damage is simply inevitable. Even if you’re careful you won’t be able to avoid the scarring or defilement, especially on the nanoscopic level. Should you have these kitchen worktops for 2-5 years, they will be riddled with imperfections.

It all matters, because bacteria loves to settle in these tiny nooks, and even when using cloth, soap and antibacterial wipes, detergents, antiseptics, antibacterial sprays, gels or cleaning products, you will never remove all of the lingering grime. The solution here is to implement kitchen worktops that can resist all kinds of damage, especially the vulnerability to porosity.

It’s simple – if liquid can’t penetrate the surface of the worktop, and impacts or abrasion don’t yield any damage to the worktop, 99% of the bacteria will be annihilated with a single swipe of the cloth and accumulation of grime in the microscopic grooves and crevices will cease to happen.

Opting for quartz kitchen worktops is the answer:

Quartz does not scratch when objects glide along its surface. In fact, even bladed, sharp items such as knives don’t leave a mark on the quartz kitchen worktops. Many people don’t even bother with purchasing chopping boards because of quartz’s durability. This is yet another fantastic quality of quartz worktops,

Quartz does not chip when simple household objects drop on the surface (of course if you hammer it, it will chip eventually – it’s not indestructible),

Quartz worktops don’t crack under pressure. You can even stand on quartz kitchen worktops, lean against them, pile dishes on top and it will never split (of course under condition that it has enough cabinet support – if you remove 1 cabinet, and decide to stand on the worktop in the weak spot, it may crack – but even then it’s unlikely).

As we’ve already mentioned above, the anti-porous nature is the biggest attribute of quartz worktops. That means it ages very well and doesn’t damage over time. Not only does this prevent grime and bacteria from collecting in the minute fissures, it also hinders liquid from expanding and cracking the worktop, as is often the case with wooden or laminate worktops. And the bigger cracks or under-layer warping, the bigger the chance of bacteria, grime or food particles gathering in these places. If this issue becomes prevalent, even making a sandwich directly on the worktop or cooking something will become off-putting and even harmful to our health.

With quartz worktops, you can forget the aforementioned issues. You need to remember – unless a lot of unnecessary, malicious power is used to purposefully try and damage quartz worktops, they will last you for a lifetime. It’s truly a product that few other kitchen worktops manufacturers can match.

Indeed it’s a tad more pricey than kitchen wood or laminate, but you’re essentially investing in a material that is near-indestructible, hygenic, sterile, simple to maintain and above all lasts a lifetime.

Are there suppliers of quartz worktops that specialise in antibacterial properties?

Of course. If you’re searching for something even more unique i.e. kitchen worktop products that are outright antibacterial, your eyes should be drawn by the likes of Silestone, Cosentino. The materials produced by Silestone are enriched with antibiotic agents like triclosan that heighten the quartz worktops resistance to bacteria, not only preventing bacteria absorption like with all other quartzes, but outright repelling it. For more information visit: Silestone Quartz Surfaces.

Where are Silestone’s antibacterial worktop products best suited?

In terms of application, these hygienic worktops are fantastic for professional restaurants where cooking and cleaning is ongoing on a daily basis. You not only guarantee yourself a more sterile cleanliness level, but you also prevent damage of the kitchen worktops – just think how many pots and pans scrape these surfaces daily. Many also argue that a professional cooking environment can benefit thanks to quartz worktops because it makes the cooking more efficient. Like we mentioned above, sometimes even chopping boards can get discarded and chefs can cut, slice and dice away instantly on the quartz worktops. Each kitchen station has their own method, but we can’t deny that quartz just makes cooking so much more simple – especially during the clean-down.

Another great application for quartz could be hospitals. As you may know, hospitals have a steadfast rule that cleanliness and a sanitation are a priority. And don’t be mistaken, quartz can be applied in different ways – kitchen worktops aren’t the only solution. You can clad the floors with quartz, as well as the walls, patient rooms, operation tables etc. Quartz worktops can even come in an anti-slipping matte finish. The point is, quartz in hospitals would be yet another precaution and measure of keeping the place safe, hygienic and sanitary.

Kitchens for those who love a perfect, neat, and disinfected home. Those who get frequently anxious about germs collecting in their kitchens, suffer from OCD or simply love that perfect look should opt for quartz worktops. Quartz worktops are guaranteed to make your kitchen far more germ-free than if you had any other worktop surface. So why not opt for this product, sleep safe at night and guarantee yourself a greater standard of cleanliness?

Don’t hesitate and order some quartz worktops for your place! It will be an unparalleled investment you won’t regret.

The later you delay it, the more likely that bacteria, germs and grime will be growing on your kitchen worktops, and the more hours you’ll have to dedicate on cleaning, and worrying if you’ve done enough. With quartz worktops all this anxiety, time-wasting and money spending will be gone.

Kitchen Worktops Online UK – Should You Seek Laminate, Wood, or Quartz as Your Worktop Surface?

When it comes to kitchen design, a kitchen worktop stands as the cornerstone, both in functionality and aesthetics. It’s therefore pivotal that you choose the right work surface, which could serve you for a long time without fail.

Prior to purchasing kitchen worktops, whether online or in-store, it’s essential to arm yourself with the necessary knowledge. As you would before buying a laptop, phone or car.

This blog post delves into the pros and cons of three popular choices in the UK (laminate, wood, and quartz), hopefully helping you to gain the needed insight to make a well-informed decision.

Why Research Is Key When Shopping for Online Worktops

Purchasing a kitchen worktop is a significant investment that can profoundly impact the overall look and feel of your space. With options ranging from sleek quartz to warm wood, and the colours in the hundreds, the choices can seem endless.

However, taking the time to research the pros and cons of each material, carefully weighing up the options, before making a purchase is crucial. By doing so, you ensure that your chosen worktop aligns not only with your aesthetic preferences but also with your lifestyle and budget.

Kitchen Worktop Express UK – Searching for the Right Countertops Online

In almost every UK home, it’s the living room & kitchen which play particularly important roles. A kitchen serves as a gathering place, a cooking space, a food prep interior – the heart of the house. Therefore, it’s particularly important to nail that space when it comes to decor: a warm and welcoming place for you and the guests, but also a functional one.

There are many ways to achieve this – you can install new windows, embed sliding doors to your garden, but the furnishing, especially kitchen worktops, are the key.

After all, kitchen worktops, along with cabinets, will be the striking feature of that interior.

They serve as working surfaces, places to cook, eat or, if extended into a breakfast bar, as places to play games or finish homework. The right kitchen worktops are essential to any home, and as such they need to be created from a proper material, shaped conveniently and located in the most accessible places.

Whether you prioritize durability, affordability, an efficient cooking space or environmental sustainability, informed decision-making is key to selecting a kitchen worktop that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations.

Exploring the Benefits and Drawbacks of Laminate, Wood, and Quartz Worktops

In this section, we’ll delve into the main attributes of laminate, wood, and quartz worktops, providing insights into what sets each material apart.

Kitchen Laminate Worktops:

Laminate kitchen worktops are great, because they can be purchased at an affordable price. They can have a uniform pattern, or containing various motifs, from synthetic designs to natural lookalikes.

A laminate kitchen surface is a hard but simultaneously very easy to damage material. A simple slice of the knife will do the job to create a noticeable incision that is hard to repair.

While kitchen laminate worktops are better at absorbing stains or moisture than natural wood, they’re not impregnable, and over time, severe staining will show up on the surface is maintenance is not upkept regularly.

Luckily, laminate designs do not fade over time and are very easy to install. And they are relatively easy to clean – just a damp cloth and detergent will do the job.

Unfortunately, over time, moisture can cause these natural work surfaces to bend or warp, which in turn will cause cracking, and any food particles that enter that area can create mould or heavy staining & structural damage.

Damaged laminate kitchen worktops cannot be repaired in an efficient, sustainable way, meaning that an average lifespan of a laminate worktop cut to size is 4-6 years max.

Laminate Worktop Pros:

• Affordability: Laminate worktops cut to size are often the budget-friendly option, making them ideal for cost-conscious consumers.
• Variety: With an extensive range of colours and patterns available, laminate offers versatility in design choices.
• Ease of Replacement: compared to quartz, laminate UK worktops aren’t heavy. Any layman with a bit of strength can lift and move the worktops around. So if you’re keen on refurbishing yourself, these might be the key.

Laminate Worktops Cons:

• Durability: While laminate is moderately resistant to staining, they will not withstand scratches, heavy impacts, mechanical damage or prolonged exposure to heat as well as acidic substances. Their vulnerability is widely known and longevity is relatively poor.
• Aesthetic Limitations: Despite advancements in design, laminate can sometimes lack the natural look and feel of wood or stone. The design choices are generally quite bland and look cheap.

Solid Wood Worktops:

Solid wood surfaces are very popular and compact worktop solutions. On many occasions they emphasise the style and originality of our kitchen, all the while creating a warm atmosphere and a portal into the world of nature.

Most durable wood kitchen worktops made of beech and oak – they are characterised by low shrinkage, meaning they hardly react to moisture and temperature changes.

When deciding on wooden kitchen worktops we have to remember about impregnation. You can use oil or acrylic lacquer for this purpose to limit the absorption.

However, with wood, staining can never be fully repelled. This is why when you cook a curry, spill wine, coffee or oils, be sure to instant wipe everything up. If left over night, these could have devastating effects you’re your wooden worktop.

Wooden kitchen worktops are also relatively easy to install. We can even modify bits of wood and fit it ourselves.

Unfortunately, while the organic charm of wood is very strong, these kitchen work surfaces are easy to scratch, warp and burn, if hot pots, pans or oils spills come into contact. Wood is a natural material and therefore requires regular maintenance.

Solid Wood Worktops Pros:

• Warmth and Character: Wood exudes warmth and character, adding a timeless appeal to any kitchen. Organic décor themes were popular 100 years ago, are popular now, and no doubt this trend will be popular in the future.
• Versatility: From rustic to contemporary, wood complements a variety of kitchen design styles, making it a versatile choice.
• Renewable Resource: Opting for sustainably sourced wood supports environmentally friendly practices.
• Easy to Fit and Install: Cutting the wood kitchen worktop is simple – anyone can do it with the right tools. Installation is also straightforward.

Solid Wood Worktops Cons:

• Maintenance: Wood requires regular maintenance, including sealing and oiling, to prevent water damage and maintain its appearance.
• Susceptibility to Damage: While durable, wood can be susceptible to scratches, dents, and heat damage if not properly cared for. And even innocuous liquids like tomato juice can stain the wood to the point of necessary replacement.
• Requirement for Constant Maintenance: Impregnation and constant care over these vulnerable wooden worktops is paramount.

Kitchen Quartz Worktops:

Stone kitchen worktops are some of the most durable building materials on the planet. They range from marble worktops, granite worktops, but in recent years it’s the quartz worktops that have come out on top.

A quartz worktop is extremely effective in a kitchen environment, enhancing the character and resistance of the interior. We must remember that the more porous the material, the more susceptible it will be to permanent staining. When choosing a quartz solid surface, you’re opting for a glossy, water-repellent material that is completely resistant to absorption.

Stone kitchen worktops, compared to laminate worktops, are very hard-wearing surfaces. In fact, many users utilise them to straight up cut their food and veggies, instead of using a chopping board. They are very durable, resisting acids, impacts, knives and over time they do not change their appearance. They are easy to clean and maintain – all you require is some lukewarm water, Fairy liquid and sponge.

Despite that, it should be mentioned that stone kitchen worktops are very heavy and difficult to transport. And manufacturing a quartz slab into a kitchen worktop requires the hand of expert fabricators, professional tools, saws, CNC machinery etc. Which is why in order to obtain quartz work tops, you’ll need the help of specialists.

Below we outline all the quartz worktops pros and cons.

Quartz Worktop Pros:

• Durability: Engineered for durability, quartz worktops are highly resistant to scratches, stains, and heat.
• Longevity: Quartz kitchen worktops are known to retain their original quality for years, even decades. The way you purchase them, will be the way they stay for years to come. Quartz kitchen surfaces are resistant to sunlight, UV light, colour fading or discolouration.
• Variety: With a vast array of colours, patterns and depth-options available, quartz worktop UK offers endless design possibilities. From plain designs to marble mimics.
• Low Maintenance: Non-porous and easy to clean, quartz requires minimal maintenance to keep it looking pristine. And even heavy stains left over night will not absorb into the surface of quartz.

Quartz Worktop Cons:

• Cost: Quartz worktops tend to be slightly more expensive than laminate or wood options, making them better suited for those with larger budgets. However, don’t be discouraged, as the kitchen worktop price difference isn’t staggering. And bear in mind: for a few hundred extra quid, you are investing in a long-term product that will last a generation, undamaged and unchanged. Taking that into consideration makes quartz cheap worktops all things considered.
• Installation: Due to its weight and density, quartz kitchen worktops require professional installation, and usually at least a few fitters to get the job done right. And even then, an average-sized quartz worktop installation can last up to a few hours.

Investing in Quality with Quartz Worktops

While laminate and wood worktops offer their own set of advantages, quartz emerges as the superior choice for those seeking durability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal. As the quartz worktop pros and cons above show, its unmatched resilience, varied colour options, and luxurious appearance, quartz stands as a testament to modern kitchen design.

Incorporating non-uniform surfaces with marble veining or wood grain into modern décor schemes is a trend that continues to gain popularity. The beauty lies in the ability to merge these contrasting elements harmoniously. One effective approach is to introduce a small wooden kitchen worktop extension alongside your primary quartz worktop. This arrangement allows you to utilise the durable quartz surface for your main cooking activities while leveraging the warmth and character of wood for a breakfast bar or as a stylish stand for drinks and appetisers during parties & gatherings.

Combining wood and quartz creates a fashionable contrast that adds depth and personality to your kitchen. Picture a glossy white quartz worktop cut to size, adorned with a rustic, rugged wood countertop – the juxtaposition is both striking and functional. Darker hues contribute to a sense of modern elegance, while the light, neutral tones visually expand the space and complement a variety of kitchen cabinet styles, seamlessly integrating into any setting. This blend of organic + synthetic is applicable to both traditional and modern interiors.

In essence, merging wood and quartz in your kitchen design offers the best of both worlds – durability, sophistication, and warmth. So, why limit yourself to one when you can enjoy the beauty and versatility of both?
